Welcome to Desk and Dirt, a place where I share creative glimmers in the studio, the garden, & beyond.

Second Hand Shopping for the Holidays (and all the days)

If you’ve been here for a minute, you know that, like many older millennials, I’m a sucker for nostalgia. I grew up going to thrift stores with my mom and gravitating towards 60s and 70s clothing and tchotchkes. I spent hours every Sunday at my grandfather’s home (we took care of him and his garden every Sunday) amongst his old stuff and LOVED it, especially the smell:) He lived during the great depression, and like a lot of folks who lived through that difficult time, he kept everything.

As an adult, I continue to love mid-century design and thrift shopping. It's better for the environment, and sometimes you find unique gifts for friends and family. I love the idea of giving something used, a new chance at appreciation in my home. I thrift art often and have found so many great clothing items to wear as I transition into my social work position.

Whenever I share my hauls on social media, I often get questions about where I shop. So this holiday season, I’m sharing a few of my favorite places to find thrifted and antique items.

Mona Pants Mintage, Zebulon, NC

Nestled in the heart of downtown Zebulon, is a special little shop called Mona Pants Mintage. Named for the late legend, a Boston terrier called Mona, this shop is curated with unique used and new items. Most of the items in the shop are donated, and 100% of profits go to the Mona Pants Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization that funds nationwide pet rescue groups. The Mona Pants Foundation provides protective gear for K-9 officers and equips first responders with pet oxygen mask kits. Locally, they provide pet food to families in need and assist feral cat rescues with food and medical aid. Debbie, the owner, has been a long-time pet advocate. Any day of the week, you will be greeted at the door by one or two of her adorable crew, like the tiny but mighty Piper, old man Walt, or the newest edition, jumping bean Cletus- all pups that came to her with medical needs. This shop is truly one-of-a-kind and a fav spot of mine for purchasing unique art and jewelry- Mona Pants is a must-see in Eastern Wake County! Don’t let the size of this shop (or Piper) fool you, it’s packed to the brim with delights.

Fall Back Vintage, Raleigh NC

Fall Back Vintage just opened earlier this year and is heavy on charm and vintage treasures. The colors and curation of this shop are at another level, which is not surprising since it's the brainchild of long-time antique picker/seller Laura Browning and her partner Lori Goodpasture. Fall Back Vintage is an absolutely extraordinary vintage shopping experience. If you enjoy a more curated treasure hunt, then this store is for you. It feels a bit like stepping into your grandmother’s living room circa 1968. I dare you not to find something to bring home- this store has so much to offer. Whether it's vintage clothing, furniture, or glassware you are looking for, this shop has got it!

Antiques at Gresham Lake, Raleigh NC

This store is HUGE. I typically spend at least two hours walking the many many aisles of antique booths. Antiques at Gresham Lake is one of my favorite spots in Raleigh. They always have lots of vintage holiday decor and loads of glassware and art. I’ve never once left empty handed (I know do I ever?).

The Cotton Mill Flea Market, Selma, NC

For those of you who aren’t familiar, both Selma and Smithfield are home to several antique and vintage shops. The Cotton Mill is always at the top of my list, though. Set in an old cotton mill, this is another place where I can typically spend a couple of hours treasure-hunting. Of note, the shop owner is also an ally to our furry friends, and there are generally multiple kitties and quirky pups trotting around- so if that’s not your thing, I get it. It is my thing, so I consider it a shopping perk:)

The Pink Flamingo

Last but far from least (and a Richards Family FAVORITE) is The Pink Flamingo, in Clayton, NC. The Pink Flamingo is another smaller shop, but it contains floor-to-ceiling treasures. Kim, the shop owner and long-time family friend, has been in business for almost 20 years. I dare you to leave without finding a little something to take home. I have purchased some incredible original art at The Pink Flamingo, and there is always a large variety of seasonal decor. There’s also a section dedicated to craft supplies and notions. There is also a large section of housewares and handmade pottery towards the back of the shop. If you decide to stop in, be sure to let Kim know that Amy and Doris sent you:)
